recently, amateur photographer Per-Arne Milkalsen captured the mysterious phenomenon over Andenesm, Norway.

After 25 years of working at a rocket launch site in Norway's far north, the photographer became fascinated with aurorae.

Because it is so close to the North Pole, the northern lights are frequently visible here.

Aurorae are caused by the interaction of solar wind with the Earth's magnetic field, and are therefore more common at the poles where magnetic forces are strongest.

The strange-shaped object may have been caused by light from the aurora, or being bounced off a space satellite.

Mr Mikalsen told the Mail Online that, 'I have never seen an object like this before, and I am eager to find an explanation for the phenomenon,'
